Misericordia Cabinet

This project was a collaboration with my carpenter father, who built an arched cabinet shaped like a pre-Renaissance Madonna’s robe. I learned techniques of woodcarving to create the life-size figure in poplar while my own daughter was young. The role of the ambiguous, naked, “merciful heart” figure, half-emerging, protective, was expanded as an installation; it became a meditative shrine after the attacks of 9-11.
